It's unclear if Illinois will start enforcing a hotly debated abortion notification law this week after all.
After decades of legal wrangling, it appeared the law requiring physicians to notify parents before their teenage daughters get an abortion would take effect Tuesday. But state regulators now say a grace period for doctors has been extended several days.
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation granted an initial 90-day grace period in August. But spokeswoman Susan Hofer says the agency issued an extension late Friday. It'll remain until the state's Medical Disciplinary Board meets on Wednesday.
The board could ask for another extension. It also could ask that authorities to start enforcing the law immediately.
We are urging you to contact Illinois Governor Pat Quinn at 217-782-0244 in Springfield or 312-814-2121 in Chicago and tell him to enforce the Parental Notification Law.
This law has been on the books since 1984 and was updated in 1995. The abortion industry has had a 14 year “grace period”. This good law needs to be enforced. It only makes sense that parents be involved in major medical decisions involving their underage children.
We don’t allow our daughters to have their ears pierced or their appendix removed without our consent or knowledge. Why would we allow them to undergo an invasive, serious, surgical procedure that can have life threatening effects?
The Illinois Parental Notification Law needs to be implemented and enforced. Children need to be protected. Parental rights need to be restored and put back into the hands of parents.
Be encouraged ~Angela
