On Father’s Day we lament and honor fatherhood. I don’t know if men realize how vital their role as father and daddy is to their children. He is the foundation. A child naturally looks to their father as the protector and the provider.  A dad has the strength of superman, nerves of steel, the soft comforting arm of night. He has the wisdom of ages and doesn’t look like it : )  and the patience of a saint. He is the “jam-remover” by constantly helping the kids get out of them…whether it be a gentle nudge to teens slacking on curfew and chores, or getting rid of the overflow of suds coming from the backyard fountain after the four year old poured bubble bath in it-- before mom finds out! Thanks, Dad, for having our backs. The average dad (at least in our family) will wear out a pair of shoes while the rest of the family wears out a set of tires.

Children need good role models. Little eyes emulate what they see and hear. They crave security, stability, and love. So, thank you for the tender discipline, virtues, morals, and emotional fortitude. We couldn’t fair near as well without that loving guidance. And if your dad is less than perfect, it might be a good time to forgive his shortcomings. If he is your hero, it might be time to really acknowledge him.

The greatest gift I ever had came from God: I call him Dad.
