The True Measure Of A Father...

June 2014

Fathers are the biggest source of strength for a child. Innocent eyes perceive “Dad” as the all-powerful super-hero; the most knowledgeable, truly affectionate and the most—aside from Mom—important person in the family. For daughters, fathers are the first men they adore and fall in love with. While for sons their fathers are the strongest person they know and someone they aspire to emulate. A father is the one, bearing the burdens of the world on his shoulders, willingly dons a Tinkerbelle backpack and gently holds his little girls hand and learns everything they did in Kindergarten that day.

A father is godly, fair and firm. He has the temperament of a saint; they boast of “no fears,” and though they once sported a head full of hair, now it’s a little thinner with white walls around the ears. He is self-sacrificing, a provider, full of wisdom and honest advice. He has a spine made of steel and carries a worn-out wallet once full of money; now full of pictures. A “protector” with elongated arms for lots of children to fill. He is ever-vigilant against powers that would do them harm. Let’s face it: Children need good role models. They crave security, stability and love.

Yes, the true measure of a father is not determined by the amount of his salary nor by the make of his automobile. His value cannot be judged by the latest gadget found in his pocket or the number of memberships he maintains; nor by his physique and the size of his muscles. Rather, a father’s true measure is revealed in the simple, yet invaluable gestures of love towards his wife, children and community. In other words; a real father is measured by the size of his heart.

So “Thank you Dad” on this day of honor: and if your father is less than perfect, it might be a good time to forgive his shortcomings. If he is your hero, it might be time to really acknowledge him.

Happy Father’s Day!
